"We look forward to this course so much; it's a fixture in our diary round which the whole year revolves!"
Jane Francis studied at Dartington College of Arts and the Royal Academy of Music. As a cellist, her love of continuo playing led to the study and performance of music using period instruments. She is both a cellist and viola da gambist, and works with many leading musicians in the field of period instrument performance as a continuo player. As a soloist she has played in duo partnerships with Colin Booth, Helena Brown, Kenneth Mobbs and John Wellingham, and currently works most frequently with Helena Brown. She was a co-director of the South West based baroque ensemble Continuo. She is also a member of the recently formed professional viol consort The Company of Viols.
Jane is a very experienced teacher of both modern and baroque cello, and viola da gamba, with a busy practice in Bristol, although her work as a teacher often takes her further afield. Teaching is for her an essential and integral part of being a musician; she teaches on a number of adult Baroque and Renaissance chamber music courses, gives workshops, and has become involved with Kodaly concepts of music education, gaining a Certificate of Kodaly Music Education with distinction. She has written several articles on creative teaching ideas and resources, and produces innovative teaching aids and material.
