The Course

Dates for 2009: Thursday April 2nd - 9th

This week is a great opportunity for people to work on early music in a chamber music context.

Two sessions each day are in one-to-a-part groups with the services of a tutor for up to half of the 90 minute session. One of the sessions is with the same 'permanent' group each day, the other in 'non-permanent' groups that vary in size and players. Participants need to be competent at holding a part on their own in a consort without supervision.

Other sessions include a variety of technique classes, lectures, masterclass, large and small ensembles, and a choir. There are opportunities for the study of consort songs; of broken consorts of viols and recorders; of Renaissance wind music; and of trio sonatas and other baroque works with continuo. There are also plenty of opportunities for informal playing with people outwith the planned sessions.

There is no set music but a large library is available, including the Early Music Library collection of London Pro Musica. Students who can conveniently bring a keyboard are encouraged to do so. There will be shops selling music and instruments.
